SMILE with Us
SMILE is one of the newest technology-driven treatments for vision correction and was FDA-approved in 2016. The process is designed to be as comfortable as possible taking just 30 seconds to complete.
SMILE is an alternative LASIK-like treatment for myopia (nearsightedness). In fact, SMILE can correct high myopia up to -10.00 diopters. Additionally, the small incision allows the cornea to maintain more strength, improving outcomes for common eye surgery risks like dry eye.

How Does SMILE Work?
SMILE (small incision lenticule extraction) uses a highly-focused, computer-guided laser (a femtosecond laser) to reshape the cornea. The cornea (front surface of the eye) is essential for directing light as it enters the eye.
SMILE corrects myopia (nearsightedness), a condition where an elongated eyeball shape or steeply curved cornea causes light to focus incorrectly. Instead of reaching the retina (tissue at the back of the eye), light focuses in front of the retina. The incorrect focus causes blurry distance vision.
By reshaping the cornea, SMILE can improve how the cornea focuses light.
SMILE Procedure
During a SMILE procedure, an eye surgeon (ophthalmologist) creates a lenticule (a small, lens-shaped tissue) within the cornea. Then, an arc-shaped incision is made in the cornea to extract the lenticule. The removal reshapes the cornea to correct nearsightedness. Typically, the incision heals within a few days, and patients experience sharper vision quickly.
Recovery time for SMILE is typically shorter than other corrective laser surgery methods, with many patients returning to normal activities within 24 hours.
One study found that 88% of SMILE patients achieved 20/20 vision or better. Notably, SMILE may be better for patients with high myopia. Comparative to LASIK, SMILE patients can achieve vision correction for high myopia with fewer patients needing an enhancement procedure.
