Gold Ortho-K
Ortho-k or orthokeratology uses rigid gas permeable lenses (sometimes called hard contact lenses) to slow myopia progression and correct vision. At Golden Vision Optometry, customized ortho-k lenses are designed for your child’s unique corneal shape.
Golden Vision Optometry proudly has 5 Fellows of the International Academy of Orthokeratology and Myopia Control (FIAOMC) out of only 150 in the world! A FIOAMC practitioner represents the gold standard of ortho-k and myopia control, having completed hundreds of training hours and demonstrated success treating challenging cases.

How Does Ortho-K Work?
Ortho-k (orthokeratology) uses specially designed, custom-fitted rigid gas permeable (RGP) contact lenses to reshape the cornea. Similar to how dental braces reshape your teeth to improve function, ortho-k lenses reshape the surface of the eye to help focus light correctly.
Ortho-k lenses are worn at night, but vision correction lasts throughout the day. Ortho-k lenses must be worn consistently as prescribed to maintain results.
Ortho-k is sometimes referred to as corneal refractive therapy (CRT), however, CRT is a specific brand of corneal reshaping lenses with proprietary fitting methodology. With ortho-k, measurements are taken using an instrument called a corneal topographer. Instead of touching your eye, a corneal topographer uses refracted light to map the surface of the eye.
Using the data map of the cornea, Golden Vision Optometry designs ortho-k lenses according to the patient’s prescription and unique cornea shape.
Our Customized Lens
Golden Vision Optometry uses ortho-k lenses for patients with myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. Our lenses are custom-designed to help correct vision in patients with higher prescriptions and severe astigmatism.
We offer many different designs for our ortho-k lenses, including Abiliti™ by ACUVUE and a number of other CRT/ortho-k options.
Our Customized Lens are highly oxygen permeable and require minimal time to adapt to, allowing children to experience the benefits with less initial discomfort. More than 5,000 myopic children at our various clinics are now using our Customized Lens to prevent and treat myopia.
Golden Vision Optometry created unique lenses so that we have the flexibility to help more patients. Chinese children are genetically prone to myopia and tend to experience environmental conditions that lead to high myopia, particularly the focus on school work.
Higher levels of education can introduce environmental factors that contribute to myopia progression. The long hours spent studying, reading, and writing during school years focus primarily on near-work activities. As a result, education standards contribute to high rates of myopia in East Asia.
One Shanghai study conducted with 5,083 university students found some degree of myopia in 95.5% of the subjects. High myopia accounted for nearly 20% of the students.
Available for High Prescriptions
Our ortho-k lenses can help correct a wide range of prescriptions. The Customized Lens can correct a high degree of myopia (exceeding -10.00 diopters) and a moderate to high amount of astigmatism (up to 4.00 D). Commercially available ortho-k lenses typically correct vision up to -6.00 D and a minimal amount of astigmatism (up to 1.75 D).
It’s beneficial to limit any degree of myopia progression, but it’s particularly crucial for patients with moderate to high myopia. Typically, myopia severity is categorized as:
- Mild myopia: -0.25 to -3.00 D
- Moderate myopia: -3.25 to -5.00 D or -6.00 D
- High myopia: greater than -5.00 D or -6.00 D
Patients with moderate to high myopia have an increased risk of developing eye health problems, including eye diseases. By providing patients with an ortho-k option for high myopia and astigmatism, we can help preserve their sight and prevent worsening eye problems.
Based on data collected in our clinics, our lenses slow down myopia progression by an average of 75%. Comparatively, other ortho-k lenses provide an average control of about 50%.
Less Wear Time
Another benefit of our ortho-k lenses is a sophisticated 6-curve design. The design allows full-day vision correction after wearing the lenses for a few hours overnight. Most ortho-k lenses require at least 8 hours of sleep time with the lenses to produce crisp vision throughout the day.
With other ortho-k brands, it can take 2 weeks or more to achieve maximum vision correction, with some improvements noticeable in a few days. Usually, after one night wearing customized lenses for a few hours, a moderate prescription myopic patient will see close to 20/20 the next day.
Our ortho-k lenses offer our patients more flexibility, demonstrating our continued commitment to convenience in everything we offer our patients.
Taking Care of Your Ortho-K Lenses
Because they aren’t daily disposables like most standard contact lenses being prescribed today, ortho-k contact lenses require daily cleaning and care.
At Golden Vision, we provide you with a hydrogen peroxide system that makes it convenient to thoroughly clean your lenses daily. If you develop an illness or infection of the eye, don’t wear your ortho-k lenses until the symptoms have cleared up. Make sure your lenses are cleaned regularly when you aren’t wearing them.
